If I keep the UI window minimised, the programme doesn't freeze at all. It transpires the UI freezes, but the programme actually keeps functioning (downloads/uploads continue). I also tried various other potential solutions such as changing where torrents save to, whether completed downloads save to alternative locations etc. I tried all solutions I could find online - running utorrent as admin, reinstalling, updating, changing settings on adblocker, blah blah - the problem persisted. Seemingly no pattern to which downloads cause the state - some are small (under 700mb), others are larger (over 5gb). Windows couldn’t find any problems with the firewall on your computer.
